Has anyone fitted an oil temp gauge?

Hi all

My 850 has the BMW add-on tach and clock.

I was thinking of ditching the clock and fitting and 2" aftermarket oil temperature gauge... I'd rather know how hot my engine is plus I always wear a watch.

Has anyone done this?

How / where did you install the sender into the engine?

Appreciate any input on this

With regards as to where to put the sender, last night I was removing the sidestand (to weld a larger foot on it) and I spotted this:

It is up under the left hand jug.

It sure looks like an oil sender to me. Would it be the pressure sender or temp sender??

Either way I gather it contacts engine oil.

Maybe I could install a T piece and add the oil temp sender to it??

Hi Tracy,

thats the oil pressure sensor. It does not measure the oil temperature. With regards to the sensor maybe it is worthwhile looking at the R1100RS/RT/GS which had a sensor for the oil temp (indicated through the famous FID). Since the engine base of these engines is the same it might be worthwhile having a look if there is a spare available from the dealer ...

So it is in contact with circulating engine oil. Great, I'll install a T piece and just add the sender from the oil temp gauge (once i buy one).

Hi Tracy,

as I said that is the oil pressure sensor and I don't know what kind of "t-piece" you would like to install ... An electrical t-connector (will not work)? A t-piece which holds the pressure sensor and a temperature sensor? That will have to be made ... which is not an easy task plus it will stick out quite a bit.
