Mods. to your bikes! (inspiration wanted!)

Post by tommy »

couldn't find any threads like this after a quick search so..

just wondering what mods you've done/want to do to your bikes. would be cool to see all the things we've borrowed from other BM bikes to add to ours, and if we could help each other out with best suited parts etc.

Mine...
Bike: Rockster

Mods. so far: Carbon Remus end-can (soon to include Y-piece), 1150GS Handguards, 1150GS sump guard (sprayed black), front carbon mudguard, centre stand (never came with one when I bought it)

Mods. wanted: aggressive looking engine-bars, perhaps a screen if i could find a good-looking one (considering 1150GS screen), g.p.s. a must!, and a few good travels!!

that's all i can think of, i'm sure there's more. would be great to hear about your mods.

I have a few mods done... really minor stuff.
I have a 2006 R1150R non-ABS.

I have a Rhinewest Performance chip, Zach muffler and Kisan SignalMinder installed. The Rhinewest chip is nice. I had a brand new bike when I picked it up from the dealer after they installed it. the Zach has a nice deep note to it.

other aesthetic mods include chrome fork tube caps, chrome telelever caps, chrome cam covers and a Wunderlich temp gauge for the centre cap.
from a BMW R1200C I borrowed a pair of chrome oval mirrors and chrome brake & clutch levers. overall, I think the bike looks stock.

and hoping to have a set of Ohlins on there for the spring! :D

*EDIT* I've added a pic...

For My Rockster(s)

BMW stuff:
R1150GS Handguards
R1100RS injector covers
R1150R rear shock (Rockster shock worn out).
R1100S front mudguard.

Aftermarket:
Remus Ti Can (did have the Y-piece as well, but the welds broke - lasted about 60,000 miles on 2 bikes though.)
Stanton Head Guards
Image
Givi Top Box
Image
Bagster tank cover
Goodridge brake hoses. (front)
Bar-Backs
R1100GS length Paralever arm.
Front mudguard extender.
PIAA 1100X auxiliary full-beam lamps
PIAA wiring harness for ancillery equipment (eg heated waistcoat). (rescued from 2nd bike)

Home Made:
Flyscreen
Image
Top Box mounting plate
Pillion tray luggage rack. (from OE BMW bits)
Image
Ferry ticket clip on left handlebar (just visible on photo above)

Most of these mods are bolt ons - so removable. :)

Hmmm. Mine's a Rockster too:
OEM windscreen and centerstand - dealer add-ons

First other mod was Hyperlites auxillary brake lights.
BMW hard luggage/rack (system cases)
Wunderlich tank protection pads (thick, black rubber - they look good on my white/black bike)
Upgraded the horn to a Stebel Nautilus Compact
Added two sets of "other" lights: PIAA fog lights under the oil coolers, and "Off road only" lights on the lower forks (used the fender attachment bolt holes)
Additional power outlet on handlebars
RAM mount balls for XM Radio and GPS
Autocomm Pro-7 Sport system (communications, etc)
Removed the charcoal cannister
I pulled the muffler for a month, but the bike seemed to ride sideways... so I put it back on.

Here's a recent photo:

At the risk of hijacking the orginal intent of this thread, the short answer is "Yes, but why would you want to bother?"

The cannister is one piece of pollution control equipment that really works (keeping gasoline vapors in your fuel system, rather than venting them straight to the atmosphere) and does not adversely impact performance or mileage in doing so. While I admit the external mounting detracts from the clean lines of the R, that in my book is not reason enough to remove it.

If looks are the motivation behind the desire for a cannisterectomy, you can just relocate it under the fuel tank rather than resectioning it - at least if you have a non-abs bike. My 2 cents worth: Just leave it.

Most folks pull it for looks (I'm vain that way), relocating it is a better idea, if that's an option.

Here are some upgrades and modifications that I made to my 2002 R1150R:

Ergonomics and Comfort
• Wind screen – I have tried the BMW fly screen, BMW touring screen (with and without the Laminar Lip), and MRA Vario screen. The fly screen is the best looking but does not offer much protection. The MRA screen looks good, too, but the wind flow was not right for me. I am currently using the touring screen.
• GS hand guards – I use these for colder weather riding.
• BMW tall seat, with additional spacers
• Sheepskin butt pad (Alaska Leather)
• Kaoko throttle control
• Luggage rack with Pirate’s Lair backrest

Conspicuity and Visibility
• K mirrors – the rectangular mirrors offer a wider field of view than the stock “Mickey Mouse” ears.
• Upgraded H4 headlight bulb (Philips 90/100 watt) and dual relays.
• Motolights with 50 watt yellow bulbs mounted on fork.
• Hella Optilux driving lights with 50 watt H3 bulbs on RCU brackets.
• License plate frame with two rows of red LEDs

Storage
• System cases
• Top case (J.C. Whitney)
• Bags connection tank bag – day pack

Safety
• Metal quick disconnects for fuel lines (Omega)
• GPS (Garmin Zumo) with XM radio and traffic service

Appearance, Entertainment and Other
• Clear turn signal lenses and bulbs that look bluish but flash amber.
• Power outlet
• Digital thermometer for ambient temperature
• Etymotic er6i ear buds
• Cardo Scala Rider Bluetooth headset

I like this thread........ can we get some more pictures of the various mods (screens, additional lights, racks & luggage etc..).
My silver 03 bike is fairly standard except Remus titanium pipe & collector pipes, BMW panniers (no rack, but I want to get one..... not sure what options available), GS hand protectors and fender extender.

Here's a pic of a rack that I made, makes it easy to tie a duffel to the bike. The key feature is that it's wide enough to support more than just the middle of the bag.

Here's a pic of some stuff tied down;

Not fancy but very functional.

I should have posted this too; this is the old rack & the backrest for MLW;
Image

Everybody @ the bash thought I was too harsh; but MLW said she didn't mind the hard aluminum backrest (she's German), you can probably pick it out it in this picture.
Image

With the current system whatever is tied down becomes the backrest.

The 'luggage rack' & backrest is for sale BTW; $100 for everything.

Wait............. there was a 2006 R1150R? I thought they stopped at 2005.

(I hate it when I'm wrong, but I need to be wrong soon because I'd like to get it over with early in the year. So please feel free to correct me if I am. Thanks.)

That's the low exhaust so that you can fit a full sized left bag?

I've been gone a while. Steve: you have a roadster again? What about the Harley and the RT and the LT? I'm so confused right now.

I think they stopped in the US at 2005... but Europe and Canada got 06's... basically left over stock in new colors - deep blue metallic, piemont red, granite grey metallic, and white aluminum matte/sydnet blue metallic. nothing else changed AFAIK.
