No matter what else you do, stay dry. There is nothing more miserable than being cold AND wet.

It may be a little late and I wish I had this info earlier. I took a ride from central NC across I-40 West into Knoxville, TN. Temps were in high 30's. Hippo Hands were a life saver. I had light work gloves and had to turn the heated grips to low otherwise my hands were burning. Had toe warmers on the inner layer of socks covered by another layer of heavy socks and waterproof boots and did fine. Fuel stops provided an opportunity for a brief warm up and stretch.
My biggest problem was sitting in the same position for 2+ hours. I need to add some highway pegs or move up to a touring bike.
