I finally found a place to make me 1 3/4" SS tips to replace muffler.

I just got a chrome one for dirt cheap:

I did fit a piece of flat aluminum between the cat outlet and the tip to take up the small bit of difference in diameters.

I had one of those too. It is nearly impossible to keep tight and was almost completly rusted in 2 months. I am not trying to sell these myself just telling you will you not be happy with the one you ordered unless you live in "0" % humidity and have no salt within a hundred miles of you.

I live in Florida and when we get get bored we go outside and watch things rust.

To keep it tight, once it was all in place, I drilled a hole through one of the mounting holes through the cat outlet. I then ran a sheet metal screw with a wave lock washer in. I'm in the panhandle of Florida, so I have the humidity but not the salt spray you have. I'll let you know in a year or two how it's holding up.

Wouldn't Locktite work just as well in keeping the bolts in? I know they make a high temp version (red) but it has to be heated to like 500 F to remove....

Any chance of getting an audio/video clip of the bike running like that? Does it sound any different than running with the muffler off? (did this today when I put my Ohlins shocks on)

I removed my exhaust and had a down tip like that for a while, but I started to get some lousy idle and stuttering on throttle. has anyone else experienced this? I replaced the old muffler and ,while quiet, the performance returned slowly over a couple of hundred miles, so I am drawn to conclude that the problem was related to the lack of back pressure, which I thought would be compensated for by the ignition computer. I thought that the cat would suffice, but apparently, in my case, it did not. any other experiences that did not work out just right? Thanks...

Performance returned slowly, eh? Might have been the Motronic computer readjusting to the changed back pressure. Did you reset the Motronic when you installed the new tip?

Aha! reset the Motronic, eh? this is news to me. could you describe this process to me? I'd rather run well with just the down tip, if I could. No I did not reset anything, I just removed the muffler and added the tip....a bit cowboy, I see now. Thanks for your direction, I hope you can give me just a little more now.

Switch the bike off, remove the seat and open the cover to the electrics box underneath
Remove fuse number 5 (fifth from the left,) for a few minutes.
Replace fuse number five, switch the bike on. (Do not start the bike.)
Twist the throttle, twice, from full-off to full-on. (this lets the Motronic know the range of voltages from the throttle position sensor.)
Close electrics box and replace seat.
Start up and ride away.

I love this site.. I pulled the can and added a tip on my 04' R1150R and it was displaying similar issues as mentioned above. I was beginning to think I'd made a mistake and then I dug up this thread. Now, Motronic reset and the bike purrs.

On the topic of fuel air mix. After resetting the computer I'm getting a lot of popping on decel. Shouldn't the motronic reset cure this?
