Trickle Charger Green Status Light

Post by edgiovine »

I have a 2003 R1150R in Southwest Florida which I bought a year ago with 9,000 miles. I leave the bike for months at a time to go north and so I also bought a trickle charger and leave the bike plugged in when I'm not here. When I came back to the bike recently, the charger's green status light was blinking but the bike would not start. I replaced the battery and the bike starts now but it seems that the charger's green status light will still not go to solid green to indicate that the new battery is fully charged. I would appreciate hearing if anyone has seen this or if they have an opinion if my electrical system or charger may have a problem.

What type (make) of charger do you have?

If you have a Battery Tender, send it back to Deltran and they will take care of you. They will either replace it or give you a discount on a new one.

I had a Battery Tender that I am pretty sure was zapped by a voltage surged caused by lightning. I now use a surge protector with my Battery Tender.

The charger is from BMW and is labeled "BMW Advanced Charging System" with a part number of 72 11 0 419 496. I bought it last September from the BMW dealer at the same time I bought the bike. Do you think that the charger may be faulty?

If you have a brand new battery, and assuming you have been riding around with it long enough to charge it fully, then I would be suspicious that the battery charger is bad.

I believe the charger is faulty. Return it to the dealer and they should make it right under the circumstances. You can check it out by attaching it to a car battery and see if the light goes green. Was that the original battery in your '03? I have an '04 and it came with a gel battery and is still the original. No problems.
