Carb Balancer - Twinmax - Any Adapters Needed?

Post by dmk »

I'm attempting to adjust my valves on my 04 1150r and then sync my throttle bodies this coming weekend. I was going to buy a Twinmax, but wanted to make sure I didn't need any special adapters.

IMHO, get yourself a Morgan Carbtune.....way easier to use and not battery dependent like that darn Frog Twinmax contraption  !

http://www.carbtune.com/

You just remove the vacuum hoses from the bottom of the throttle bodies and replace them with the hoses from the Carbtune and away you go !!

Better still...Wait until you know a little more about the bike before you start fiddling with the Throttle Bodies. Your bike is fuel injected. No carburetors.
You can do some major damage to an otherwise fine machine if you go into it knowing so little of the basics.

Excuse me!

I was not being condescending at all. I was just giving the fellow a good word of friendly advice based solely on the content of his post. There is plenty of info here at this forum and if one wants to read some and do some searching, one can learn a lot of basic stuff about this bike before actually "tinkering" around with valve adjustments and TB synchs.

Maybe even find a friend who has done it to show you how. ChiTown is in Chicago....OU812 is somewhere in that neighborhood. I'm almost positive a local club member up that way would offer some basic instruction.

DMK,
When you order from http://www.adventuremotogear.com/twinmax-p-28.html, they come with the adapters. take your time and do it right. Here is some advise I got from JVB on another forum :

I'll walk you through it step by step:

Remove the BBS by turning anti-clockwise
Clean the BBS and reinstall it to a gentle stop clockwise
Turn the BBS anti-clockwise 1.5 turns
Do the same for the other side
Ensure the cable slack at the throttle bodies between the cable end and the bellcrank is 1mm, adjust the cable to add slack if it is too tight.
Warm the bike up to normal operating temps, use a fan on the motor to keep it from over heating.
Plug in the Twinmax to both throttle bodies(remove the hoses/plugs on the throttle bodies depending if you still have the carbon canister or not), it should be a snug fit so long as it comes with the proper adapters
Turn on the Twinmax and set the sensitivity to mid way, now zero the meter
Start the bike and check your idle speed. It should be 1150=-50 RPM
If not at the correct idle, adjust both BBS in 1/8 turn increments until it is at about 1150 RPM
Now, check the meter and ensure it is fluxuating over the zero, if not adjust one BBS no more than 1/2 turn to get the needle centered. If you need more than 1/2 turn, center it using the other BBS.
Once the idle is set, you can do the off idle sync using the cables only.
Bring the RPMs to about 2500 and check the meter. If it is not centered, you need to adjust the cable to do it.
Loosen the cable lock nut, I do this on the right side because it is easier access.
With the bike at 2500 RPM adjust the cable length until the meter is centered. It is a little fiddly, so it will take a few tries.
Once centered make sure the lock nut is tight, then retest. You may have to adjust it again. One trick is to snug the locknut lightly, then use pliers to turn the adjuster.
If all is well, check the sync at 2000-4000 RPM, and again at idle.
Adjust as necessary. Your cable adjustments should not remove enough slack to cause an idle sync issue. If it does, add slack back in and readjust the sync.
That's it, remove the Twinmax, install the plugs/hoses on the Throttle bodies, and have a beer!

Hope this helped!

I note that dmk edited his post to read "throttle bodies" about an hour and a quarter after Boxer's post.

I love my twinmax! :D My bike runs as smooth as a Bavarian Cream and both mirrors are blurr-free and crystal clear on the highway.

As to your question about adapters...my Twinmax tubes would not fit my TB's(too loose), so I replaced the tubing with smaller diameter vinyl hose I got at Tractor Supply. Now works fine.

"condescending and judgemental" [-X

I noticed that another free-loader called Mikecam a "knob" in some other post too. #-o

Too bad we don't have a way to give freeloaders a kick in the balls through the internet. =D> =D> =D>
I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray...

Why all of the hate on the "freeloaders"? You know, it takes people to have a community, and all of this negativity could easily push a current "freeloader" yet possible paying member away based upon the whole holier than thou approach. I do realize that this is a BMW forum, and there is a bit of the BMW owners have expendable income and all, but that's not true 100% of the time.

Some of these "freeloaders" could easily be in try before you buy mode, I know I was for a while. I enjoy being a part of communities where people have similar interests, are friendly, and helpful. But the whole "you don't pay so you are a piece of poo" thing I see here makes me sick.

I do agree that if you get something from this site, that you should give back. But if you are unable to give back, you shouldn't have to put up with the crap.

EDIT: I am sure I will get flamed for having an opinion (delivered well or not) that differs from the majority here, but so be it.

My Twinmax hoses were too big for the nubs on the TB's so I just cut ~ 1/2" off the ends of the rubber hoses that fit on the nubs (since they didn't look too healthy at the ends anyway) and inserted these inside the TwinMax hoses (using a little spit lubrication) and they worked great - nice and tight! I double sided stick tape my TwinMax to my tank and tune the TB's on a quiet street at 30mph. I think balancing them under load is best.

Just got my Twinmax, now to synchro the efi on my (new to me) 04 r1150ra.

I've read the instructional post above, just one thing has me puzzled. "BBS"?
Can't for the life of me think what that refers to.

And I do have the charcoal cannister - do I unhook them or something? Didn't
get a clear interpretation on that.

And exactly where do the Twinmax hoses hook onto?

Thanks for the clarifications!

PS - I am an experienced hot rodder, engine builder/tuner, etc, just haven't
messed with a BMW before. Also have considerable experience with modifying / tuning
efi systems (i.e. Ford eec-iv), so just need to get familiar with the terms associated
with this particular machine.

Macs, the BBS are the big brass screw on both the throttle bodies. On the bottom of the TB on both sides there is a small diameter black tubes, just pull it out and attach the Twinmax.
hope this helps.

Aha! BBS - of course! I did see them now that you mention it.

Just have never run across the term BBS before when working with efi. :-)

Thanks for the clarification! Now to get to work.

I doubt my friend, Boxer, intends to be either condescending and judgmental. I suspect he is warning you away from some trap he himself has been helped with. 'Course, I won't pretend to know what he thinks; he might think ya'll a bunch of yahoos, I don know.
