New guy with windshield question.
Anyone care to school me on windshield choices for an '02 R1150R? Bike came with a taller (20.5") windshield, but I'd like to swap out with a shorter ...er... more sporty one.
Would prefer to be able to use the stock BMW brackets so as to save the expense of additional hardware. I'm struggling to find any on-line sources for a BMW *fly screen* or *sport shield* though I see plenty of references in discussions here. The Givi one that I've seen on-line looks interesting but is evidently discontinued according to what I've read? I'll accept that I may have to buy new brackets, but I'm hoping that the ones on the bike can be re-used. (luggage is on the horizon and I need to save pennies!)
Appreciated the help-

Re: New guy with windshield question.
Gary,
I am pretty sure (correct me if this is wrong) but the hardware for a touring screen is different from the hardware for the fly/sport screen. My touring screen uses four mounting point total. The fly screen only two.
If you are considering shorter...go naked....take the screen off completely. You might like it. Then you can put your pennies towards that luggage you were eluding too.

Zeke-
You're right about the mounting points on the screen I have...4. I currently have the larger screen off the bike and am enjoying the feel of the wind. In fact, I took it off as soon as I got back from my purchase ride as it was a very hot day and I was melting after the ride. (As an aside... turns out the heated grips were on (high too). I didn't know the bike even had them!!)
I was considering a fly /sport screen more for aesthetics than any real need...hence my desire to do as cheaply as possible (iow using the existing brackets).
The luggage is a bit futureistic (budget wise) whereas the screen seemed more financially do-able at the moment...and I like tinkering almost as much as riding

Re: New guy with windshield question.
The BMW sport screen will fit using your touring shield brackets, but you can't buy one without the hardware. (about $220). Cee Bailey makes several shields that will fit with your brackets.
Re: New guy with windshield question.
I bought a MRA Varo Screen, it has a laminar lip that is ajustable. It looks pretty cool and it does help in the rain but I do not seem to find much of an advantage or change in my ride. I bought it from Twisted Throttle for about $145. They can tell you if your brackets will work, I think they will.
Re: New guy with windshield question.
I have had the touring, sport and fly screens. The touring and sport shields use the same brackets, and the Cee Bailey's use those brackets, too. Try the Cee Bailey's sport shield. The flyscreen has a unique racket, and is way overpriced now if you buy a new one.
The touring shield caused buffeting and gave me a headache.

Re: New guy with windshield question.
The info given as to the 'sport' and 'touring' shields taking the same bracket is correct. Also correct is that the 'flyscreen' uses a completely different bracket. I have a sport for winter and flyscreen for summer but haven't put the sport screen on in 2 years.
If you already have a touring shield on, buying used or a Cee Bailey is probably your best bet. But first, I would take it off and try naked. (no cost test!) If you like that, you might like the flyscreen, which takes only some wind off your chest and keeps bug guts off your instrument cluster!

Re: New guy with windshield question.
Thanks for the tips guys, they are all very helpful.
Interesting to note that a Google search for a BMW sport or flyscreen yields amazingly little information. Wasn't aware of the Cee Bailey source until I read it here. Guess if you want good info ya gotta go to a good place (meaning here...)

Re: New guy with windshield question.
For those of you who have tried both the BMW touring screen and the sport screen on your R1150R, which do you prefer? I've gone back and forth several times and finally have decided I like the sport screen better. (I'm 6' 2" and use the factory tall saddle.) I guess it puts my head in cleaner air or something.
Re: New guy with windshield question.
I currently have both. I am presently using the sport screen, I like it better in the summer as it allows for more *air conditioning*. I will put the touring screen back on once the temps start dropping into the 40s.Biped wrote:For those of you who have tried both the BMW touring screen and the sport screen on your R1150R, which do you prefer? Re: New guy with windshield question.
The Sport screen is "Sportier"...The touring screen is "Tourier"...So what is the flyscreen?

Re: New guy with windshield question.
I replaced the touring screen with the sport. Much better ride - no buffeting - and looks cool as well.

Sport screen in summer,
Touring screen in winter.
Touring screen is noisier and buffets.

Re: New guy with windshield question.
Just ordered a sport screen, should be here next week. I think I'll fall into the camp of using this in the warmer months and replacing it with teh touring screen when it gets colder.
Re: New guy with windshield question.
I know you were joking but I have not used my Sport screen for winter in two years and have managed to put on some pretty good miles with the flyscreen on. I think it is quieter than the sport screen. And I know it looks better! So what is the flyscreen?

Re: New guy with windshield question.
I used the Touring screen on two trips to Canada/Alaska. This summer I used the CEE Bailey sport screen (16" with squared off top and dip) for an 8k trip in the USA. I'll probably keep the sport screen on permanently. I'm 5' 9" and have the BMW tall seat.
