Household appliance woes!

Am I an old fart because I can only remember my parents refrigerator lasted over 30 years and our 6 year old one just crapped out, ruining about $200 dollars worth of groceries! Damn, it sucks to toss steak and shrimp into the trash!

This the day after I installed the 3rd microwave in a house we built 14 years ago. And one of them was repaired to the tune of $160 bucks, which works out to a service life of less than 6 years!

So I have had not one but two appliances die this week! And the dishwasher ain't been sounding too good lately either!

I truly believe that a short service life is built into these things to generate new sales but it is not working for the companies that fail me for I have a long memory and will never buy another of their products again!

It did not help that the young salesman, one of my wife's ex-students, said his parents still used the microwave from when they built the house over 20 years ago!

This really pisses me off! Money that could be spent on motorcycles is being used to replace boring stuff that dies way too soon!

You made me get up, and check out the microwave here at the store. I got it when my mom moved a couple years ago. I remember getting it as a kid.

Manufactured Feb. 1984, no problems.

But then, it's one of those pieces of crap with 1500 watts. The one at home must have all of 600 watts.

I just noticed that our microwave has a 1995 date on it. It is a GE. It still works just fine. Same for the dishwasher.

But my prediction is that next year about this time my wife will get serious about her five year's of hinting that we should "upgrade" our kitchen. When that happens, we will be throwing out appliances that work and replacing them with ones that will have a shorter life. progress.

My trusted repair guy says the fridge is toast. New one, of the brand the repairman recommended, is being delivered tomorrow.

So basically, nearly 1/3 of my projected dual sport motorcycle budget has gone out the door in the last 48 hours replacing appliances that gave less than satisfactory service life. Crap!

I've been in my current house for 12 years this month. When we moved in I bought new: Maytag over the range microwave, Maytag electric stove, Maytag washer, and a Maytag dryer. The fridge and dishwasher were fairly new at the time so I didn't bother with them. I just replaced the washer and dryer last week with some of the fancy, efficient front loaders but not out of necessity. Well, mostly. I think the washer was starting to go so we beat it to the punch. We're looking at doing the fridge and dishwasher next, but again, not out of complete failure. I can't complain about the service life I've seen with these appliances especially since I've never made any service calls, even for preventitive maintenance.

Yeah, it's eating into the 'additional motorcycle' fund, but it will make the next motorcycle easier to buy.

Jeff - I know about the new dishwashers. Ironically, we had been shopping on and off for the last couple of months for a dishwasher, assuming it was about to go. Which means, it probably will shortly, which means more 'motorcycle money' out the door!

My two year old Fridge is having problems... and I didn't get the extended warranty... at least you got six out of it... yes,it's ridiculous the way they make stuff now a days... dishwasher only a few years old also needed repairs...

Guy at work has a 20+ year old Maytag washer and dryer. Repairman comes in for something minor and tells him to hang onto it for as long as possible because he will never see another one last that long.

How come we are getting more life out of cars (virtually any modern car will go 100K+ with minimal care) but less life out of simple appliances?
