It's sad for you. I just bought an R to complement my GS. I have 17000 kms on my GS and 2500 kms on my R. So far so good. I am not worried about potential failures. It is what it is. If it happens, I'll deal with it. Now, I am not impressed with BMW's after-sales service. That is another sorry.

Ive been riding on & off since 1956 - first BMW in 1958 and several since then, the latest purchase being a May 2007 R1200R and have never had a final drive problem with any of them. I also do not know of anybody who has. Next one in my garage is the 2008 1200GS. :D

i know i'll get some flack for this.......but here is my opinion anyway....

when i was looking for a bike....i set my mind on r12r from the very beginning.........i didn't care about any failures or what anybody said about it. All I knew is that i wanted it....and i wanted it right now........this is me.

on the other hand.....there are people that will scrutinise any purchase....big or small......they are even interested in knowing if the water dries on the bike fast enough......and guess what.....it's their right to scrutinise. that's why they turn to forums.....so people can explain the good, bad and the ugly to them.....in other words....thay are looking for peoples opinions no matter what they are.

i do not think that the purpose of this forum is to put the bike on a pedestal (welll...maybe it is:-)......but to provide the information on the bike, share stories and help each other enjoy this fine machine.

but problems happen.....and i beleive that when they do, you talk about them.....and let people know that nothing is bulletproof. What I have seen here in the past week that people make desission for reasons....right or not....this forum had something to do with it. So, instead of buriying the head in the sand and running polls and proclaimimg that this bike never breaks....let's provide people with information......practical information.....(this bike is great....but here ae some problems i heard of or seen myself) and let people make desissions.......and if this desission is NOT to go with R12R.....we should be ok with it.

I am done.........tomorrow morning off to Jamaica.......wish I could have taken my bike with me.....some great twisties there......

If you buy the R1200R, you won't need the Valkyrie or the VStrom. You can sell them and "do it all" on the BMW. I had a 99 Valk Interstate and when the first R1150R came out I had to have one. Sold the Valk and never regretted it, the R1150R is the best bike I've ever had and have had no problems with it. I really like the R1200R and am afraid to ride one because I know I'll have to have one. As far as problems go, that's what warrantys are for.

I wait till after I buy to scrutinize my purchase, usually losing a night of sleep wondering if I made a big mistake. But that's the life of a compulsive motorcycle buyer. :smt073

Then a couple of days later I am thrilled with my new toy.
