New Fuel Pump vs. Quick Disconnects

The weather here in Va was wonderful yesterday so took my 04 for a ride south to Roanoke to see a friend. Stopped near Roanoke for a cup of coffee. Got back on the bike to head further south and after starting the bike I heard a raucous whine from the fuel tank. After intense listening and head scratching I figured my fuel pump was on it's way out. Long story short I headed back home all the while hoping it would get me there. Looking on line last nite pricing fuel pumps----BMW prices their parts like they don't want to sell them!

Found a new after market replacement from Beemer Boneyard. $130----thought that was bad enough but it was still roughly 1/3rd BMW list price. Pulled the cover off the quick disconnects this morning in preparation to pull the tank. Found the upper QD had come very slightly apart! Not broken but had come un-latched if you will. Re-connected and started the bike----pump is working normally and quietly now. ( btw--during the ride back yesterday there was no apparent leaking of fuel)

I'm not farting around with the QD's any longer. Not installing Omega's either. I've replaced the upper with a brass 1/4" coupling and new FI clamps this afternoon and will do the other tomorrow. My battery is maintenance free and the only reason I have to pull the tank is for ABS service and when that happens I will simply clamp the fuel line with a small pair of vise grips while the tank is off.

I've spent too much time already watching those lousy QD's for leaks. No more.

Good to hear you're back on the road after your unfortunate incident. At the risk of sounding ignorant, what is an "FI clamp".

you want 5/16" not 1/4" and you can find that tubing at a good hdwre store or a hobby shop. You're looking at a few dollars for a foot, though you may have to buy 3' to get the 6" you need (I know there's a joke in there somewhere). I scuffed the ends to make a better grab of the FI clamps, but there are some brass connectors that have barbed ends--many threads on this forum over the past two years with pictures of them--maybe home depot? lowe's or a plumbing house?

also, you want a dedicated "hose pinch" not a vise grip. You can get these at PepBoys cheaply. I would think a vise grip would have the potential of damaging the hoses. And the area is tight, two vise grips would be fighting for space.

I went to the straight tubing about 12k miles ago, have had the tank off twice since and they really didn't add much to the misery of removing the tank. And they've worked fine.
