Pondering bike sale - how much should I ask?

Scheduling, disinterest, and a recent back injury are preventing me from riding my bike like I should. I logged less than 1,000 miles in 2007. I think it's time to get out of the bike business. I'd like honest opinions about what I should be asking for my bike and I'd prefer to not have people trying to convince me that selling is a bad idea. Details follow:

Stock Rear Seat
Rear pillion cover (with bedliner coating)
The swoopy doopy bag rails
Bags
K12 Mirrors

Accessory Outlet
Tires have less than 1,000 miles on them
Brand New Battery (thanks Mike)
Always stored inside (except when at camp or bash)

Sorry to hear that you may be getting out of riding but I understand the issues. Time is always a factor and most certainly if you can't ride without pain or discomfort then what's the point in riding?

I won't attempt to dissuade you otherwise--Lord knows many of my friends and coworkers are doing their best to get me to stop riding.

You probably have as good an idea of value as I could suggest. I would only do what you probably already have-----and that's looking at the buy/sell section here to help come up with a number. I totaled an 03 5 months ago equipped much like yours but with many more miles. I think when I was in the midst of the settlement process with the insurance company I looked at book values and saw numbers of $6000 +/-.
To your benefit riding season is upon us so I wish you luck!

Have you listed your bike under classifieds?

Concerning the price, $ 5,000 seems awfully low, especially for a red R bike. Have you looked for similar bikes on the BMWMOA Fleamarket, the Internet BMW Riders marketplace (http://www.ibmwr.org/market/), Craigslist, Ebay motors, Kelly Bluebook, NADA for comparisons. Motorcycle Consumer News has a yearly used bike pricing guide. Let me know if you don't have it and I'll look it up.

Sorry you're getting out of riding. I'm sure it's a painful decision.

You might consider selling the more expensive assessories. Several pieces you have installed are always in demand here, and you can probably still get $5k for the bike. The system cases, Sargent seat and Pirate's backrest would probably push $1k used. I recall when I'd have been happy to find someone willing to take that for them. Assessories might make your bike more attractive to a buyer, but won't get you a lot more then that bluebook price.

I'd say it's definitely worth more than $5k. I would say the Sargent seat, backrest and pillion cover would be easy to sell seperately and wouldn't raise the value of the bike any by including them. From a buyer's perspective, I really wanted the side cases and wasn't willing to spend nearly as much on a bike without them because I knew a used set would be hard to find and then I'd have to re-key them anyway. So, the luggage going with the bike was a BIG selling point, in my book. So much, that I didn't bother with any bikes that didn't include the side cases.

For comparison, I just bough an '02 with under 11k miles garage kept in very good condition for $5500, which included hard bags, the BMW tankbag, and the BMW sport windshield. I felt this price was fair all around. I would start out at $6k without some of the extras or maybe $6500 with everything listed and be prepared to drop $500 or so. The problem with listing all the extras and expecting to get money for them is that you have to find the exact right person that wants those same accessories and is willing to pay for them. I think the side cases are worth keeping with the bike, though, and think they are a strong selling point for most people shopping for a BMW.

Base $5500 ('03 non-ABS)
Bags and rails +500
Sargent Seat +300
All other Acc (mirrors, backrest esp.) +200
All Electric stuff added +100
Current Service, VG Condition, New Tires +100

So $6700 and be prepared to wiggle, deliver (you have a trailer), accommodate sellers' wishes in return for Cash, quick sale, certified funds in your bank from a known National/Regional bank.

No Nigerian sales!

Good buddy....sorry to hear about your backa and your bike. She is definitely a good one and fairly fast, unfortunately, not as fast as you know who's......Barstow, WVA, Route 15, remeber......great times, but I digress.

Your bike should bring close to $5600 with the accessories. If you want to remove them and sell it for $5000 it is doable as you will sell them all. Of course there is the bother of removing and shipping.

I sold my 02' last may as it sat for $5800 + $600 for the Bitubos. As you well know it had a lot of mods, bags, exhaust, dual lights...etc.

BTW, did you ever change job direction as you were planning?

Mike Cam has it nailed down pretty well. I would ask $7K and let it go for $6700. A good deal for any buyer. I sold my 04' for $7500 last Nov farkled right along the same as yours.

i'm dealing with my back issues and i'm determined to get back to heavy riding. last year SUCKED BIG TIME for me. two major flare ups, one requiring the use of oh-so-friendly corticosteroid injections....twice.

It wasn't costing me much to keep, and in retrospect, I should have kept it for occasional rides. Not what you want to hear, but from one who has been there, my advice is to keep the bike if you can afford to do so. The Sargent, and the backrest are expensive new. And go through your garage, we want to see what else you got lying around.

Of course I remember you - it's great to hear from you. I think I may already have the bike sold but the next few days will tell for sure. Funny thing is back is feeling better each day. The next few weeks in work and personl life will help me make all my decisions more easily.
