K-9 Unit Meets the RR

Post by GypsyRR »

Yesterday I was on my DR 650 on single track trails in the forest, and I lost SPOT, my little personal locating beacon that keeps track of my 'tracks'. Info about SPOT here: http://www.findmespot.com So I brought my R1150R up today (too windy for the DR on the highway getting here) to look for SPOT. After walking out of the trail head restrooms, I saw the Law Enforcement Officer and his dog near my bike.

Apparently - you aren't suppose to ride the trails when the gates are shut. But, the trail I was on was not behind the gate. It apparently doesn't matter though. If you see closed gates you can't ride the trails (I learned that today). BUT - here's the loophole that saved me (and the fact that I wasn't carrying any narcotics). If the gates are shut, only street legal bikes can be on the trails - and both my DR and RR are. I find that an odd rule/law. If the gates are closed, it is because there is too much water on the trails in their opinion. So I figure they don't want the ATV and dirt bikes rutting up the trails.

There was a lot of water on the trails yesterday. And there is always a lot of deep sand! - I ended up having to turn back on this trail where I lost SPOT.

Notice "Vera" - she's a K-9 dog working for the kind officer in the above picture.

The Officer told me that if she finds something she will scratch the paint off my bike trying to get to the "find". I've heard these narcotics dogs can tear a car apart trying to get to the drugs. Great. Good smart dogs. But my bike doesn't have anything on it, so if she scratches it - I'm going to be really pissed. (I had a small pocket camera on me - getting 'action' photos)

I think her nose got a little too close to the cylinder heads and exhaust. She prefers to work cars rather than motorcycles.

Image

"She seems to be losing interest, Sir." (I didn't actually say that to him. I just sort of stayed quiet hoping Vera truly knew what she was doing and wouldn't make a mistake about me or my bike..........)

Nope, nada, nothin'..... no narcotics. I'm free to go.

So I told him why I was out there - to look for SPOT. That interested him. He took down my information in case someone turns in SPOT to their lost and found. I spent another couple of hours looking for SPOT, but never found him. He must have fallen off and either a) landed face down which means he can't pick up satellite anymore, or b) someone found him and turned him off.

He sends out signals every 10 minutes and I have the coordinates of his last signal. It was on the trail. I walked/rode ten minutes past that point, backtracking, and searching everywhere - even in the puddles, and could not find him anywhere. So, I'm going to give it a few days and see if anyone turns him in. He is registered to me, so they could not use him even if they tried. If he doesn't show up - I'll have to get another because I had become pretty dependent on him.

I suggest they make these units so that when they fall, they always land face up. But they would probably suggest I secure SPOT better if I'm riding trails. That would no doubt be an easier solution.

So...Do you need a new SPOT to find your old SPOT.. :D

Lucky he had the dog and didn't need his rubber gloves..

I hope you get your SPOT back....(btw I have no idea what a SPOT is..I don't think we have them down under)

Kristi,

Sorry you lost your traveling companion. :( Hopefully Mr. Spot will turn up soon.

Note that Spot works fine secured inside the top of a tank/tail bag w/o any loss of signal as long as it's logo is pointed up. I've also carried mine locked inside my Pelican top case and it works like a charm.

BTW : thanks for the post. My Spot now has "Reward" and phone # inscribed on it.

Seriously? He can be locked inside the tank bag and still get a signal even if there is nothing blocking his shot at the sky? I thought the booklet said he needed a clear view of the sky. You still have to acquire a signal before putting him inside the bag, right?

I will replace him after I give someone a chance to turn him in first. They are probably wondering what the heck it is, and it isn't doing them any good, so maybe they will do so. The added security comfort was worth the $8.00 a month. And good idea about the reward. I'll do that too as soon as I find him.

Most of the time, I have Mr. SPOT attached to my TechMount where he is perfectly happy looking up at the clear unobstructed sky. When I'm riding with my GPS (which attaches to my TechMount), I put Mr. SPOT in my tankbag where he is safe from getting lost. When I'm parked, and away from my bike, I lock Mr. SPOT up in my Pelican case. This protects him from sticky fingers and should a thief decide to take him for a joy ride, I'll know exactly where they are.

Yes, whenever I turn Mr. SPOT on ...  ... I give him a clear view of the sky for a few minutes before putting him in my tankbag.

Street Legal Bilkes on Non-Street Trails

Post by maduko »

I remember when the Weyerhaeuser trails were open in SE Oklahoma (or maybe they still are... haven't been there in years) they also had this rule about street legal motorcycles. It was largely ignored but once in a while a ranger would show up and threaten to write citations.

If you put your weed in SPOT, Vera could help you find it!

This is another reason why I'm a cat person. I've never heard of a cat harassing anyone about drugs.

Kristi

Since the unit is registered to you that had to happen through the manufacturer. I was wondering if you call the manufacturer, if they can back door a signal to your unit and provide you with the coordinates.......if possible. I would pressume that the unit would have to be on. So even if someone picked it up the momemnt they turn it on they should be able to get a location......

Just a thought...... :-k :-k

Very interesting! A "Spot" thread that includes a dog. Mars must be aligned with Pegasus.
