Day Two of my 08 Snowy Mountains ride.

Post by DJ Downunder »

On Saturday we woke up about 7.30 ready for an 8.30 breakfast...I peeked out the door and took this pic of my bike..It was another beautiful day.

Image

.

My bike was all wet and I said..Jeez it must have rained over night..I turns out that all the guys bikes out the back were dry and only mine was wet because of the garden sprinklers out the front...Bugger!

Our usual place for a cooked breakie was not doing them this year so we wandered down the road to the local bakery.

All the buildings in town are beautifully restored.

Image

Image

Image

.

Most had something called a Bacon and egg toastie.

Image

.

On the way back we came across this clean looking old K bike with a System One helmet..BMW's first flip helmet.

Image

.

Once on our bikes we needed to gas up so we headed to the nearby Petrol station and we found out that that was the last day that they would be selling petrol..I'm not sure what the story was about why..but I took some pics anyway.

This is Denis after filling up.

Image

.

This old truck was parked out the front and Denis said that his grandfather had one the same when he was a kid..and he used to sit on his lap as he drove it.

Image

.

In the shop part where you pay the money there were heaps of very old toy trucks and tractors..check it out.

Image

Image

Image

.

We were soon on the road and ready for another big day in the saddle.

Image

.

I think these poles are from when a train line that once went across this dry lake.

Image

.

It's always good when cars move over so you can pass on double lines without even going over the double lines.

Image

.

This is Greg on the new 800 beamer...He loved it.

Image

.

Our next stop was in Jingellic for a cold drink/ice cream and toilet.

Image

Image

Image

.

Back on the road again heading for our lunch stop were we would catch up with one of the guys friend that was going to join us for a while.

Image

.

I don't know who this was because I don't go over the speed limit (100 kph)

Image

Image

Image

.

We filled up with fuel and then filled up with burgers.

Image

.

George (K1200S) copped a grasshopper on his case..Some got them on their visor..I was lucky..I only got little mozzie size bugs.

Image

.

Dave joined us on his yellow 1200GS..He's a local..so he knows the roads like the back of his hand.

Image

We hit the road again and I tryed to take a pic of the riders behind me before we got to the really twisty stuff ahead.

Image

Image

We had some of the best winding roads up ahead.

Image

After an hour or so of some great winding roads I came across a scene that I never like to see...I rider down ahead...Bugger!!!!

Image

.

My mate Peter was leading and came across a strip of gravel right on the racing line..Not that we were racing..I'm sure you know what I mean.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

.

We puled his bike out of the bush..and back up to the side of the road..(when I say we..the others did..I just took pics)

Image

.

I tryed to show the strip of gravel but it does not show up very well in the pics.

Image

Image

.

Someone said.."Here's your visor Pete"..and he said "That's odd..that's not mine"..We soon realized that someone else had also gone off in the same spot not long before...We even found a third scrape on the road and flattened scrub so three riders had actually gone down on the same corner..going in the same direction..all within a few days of each other...What a bugger!!!

Image

Image

Image

.

The bike looked bad..and not ridable we all thought.

Image

.

Pete tryed to start it and it started right up...But was pissing oil out from the left engine case.

Image

Image

.

For the next 10-15 minutes we tryed everything to stop the leak..We tried screwing a screw into the hole..we tried taping it..even tried sticking a lollie over the hole..Nothing seemed to work

But I had just the tool for the job..In my seat bag I had a 50cm RHR..(round hard rock).I use it under my side stand when parking on grass.

Anyway..I started tapping away at the hole from all angles..gave it one last tap and said "There you go start her up"

It worked..there was no leak at all...thanks to my rock.

Image

.

We were all getting ready to head off when I see Steve (Boxerboy) with a branch from a tree and he was sweeping the road with it...What a guy.

Image

Our next stop was Jindabine..about an hour or so away...We all had our fingers crossed for Pete..and hoped he would make it there ok.

I stopped for a few pics along the way and planed to meet up at the pub in Jindabine.

Image

Image

.

This is the lake at Jindabine.

Image

Image

Image

.

I had to ride down this nasty rutted dirt road to get to the lake.

Image

Image

.

All the guys were already at the pub and I noticed that Pete's bike had also made it there ok.

Image

.

The crash had really put a damper on things..and it didn't help when Dave (the local guy..He's left in this pic) said that he knew about the gravel and said he was flashing his headlight to try and warn Pete who was ahead of him..I would have maybe used my horn..I guess it's one of those Would'a-should'a things.

Image

.

Pete said his bike was running perfect..and thanks to my rock had not leaked a drop..So we all hit the road (after saying bye to GS Dave) and we all headed to our final stop for the day...Adaminaby.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

.

Yesterday I saw one of those signs and it said that Police were targeting Seat Belts...That put a grin on my face.

.

Image

Image

.

Once stopped I checked my foot pegs for wear..I'm sure that I had scrapped them a few times..But it was only my center stand showed any signs of wear.

Image

.

Not a bad room for about $40..and that includes a cooked breakfast.

Image

.

We walked up to the bowling club for a meal.

Image

Image

.

We ordered and I checked out all these old pictures around the walls.

Image

.

The pictures show how in 1957 (my birth date) the town of Adaminaby was floaded..(on perpose)..because of a man made dam..and all the town had to be moved to where it is now..Amazing.

Image

.

This pic showed 'moving the Bank'

Image

.

Our meals arrived..I had steak.

Image

.

After our meal some headed of to the local Pub..I headed back to see if the footy was on telly..It was a great walk back..with stars so bright everywhere.

Something you don't see living in a large city.

Image

Image

.

That's about it for Day Two...I'll post my last day pics soon.

Great documentation of the ride and of the unfortunate crash. Glad the rider is okay. It's always interesting to see what gear was used and how it faired in these incidents. That is some really awesome countryside.

Those are some great pictures, thanks for sharing. Too bad about the Suzuki but it's a good thing the guy is alright, and that you had your rock with you! And that K bike looks incredible. =D>

Great pics again DJ.
I sure am glad to see the rider wearing gear. That could have been a real mess.
Glad to see you got a free bike wash out of the deal.
I wonder if Aerostitch sells those rocks :-k ....

Thanks for posting day 2. I will be waiting for the rest. :smt023 Glad the Suzuki rider had proper gear, he would hve been realy hurting if not for the leathers and a good helmet. Hope he is doing well. The food looked good, the weather looked wonderfull. We are about 5 to 6 weeks from good warmer weather here.

Peter personally reported the accident and gravel issue to an office in Jindabyne that was open on the Saturday.
We followed up during the week with online accident/road condition reports to many authorities, and I did receive a reply telling me that they had found the area, with difficulty, and swept it clean.
The only reason they found the loose gravel, which was very difficult to see, was that rain had darkened it. It was slower to dry than the surrounding road.
So, some reasonable agitation got a result.
Cheers...and stay horizontal!
