Day one of my 08 Snowy Mountains ride.

Post by DJ Downunder »

The plan was to meet at Steve's (Boxerboy) house on Friday morning...and the weather was perfect.

Soon after I got there Peter turned up on his new'ish Suzuki 750 crotch-rocket.

Image

.

Pete is the best rider in the group (imo) and will often lead..and wait at corners to make sure we all go the right way..then pass us all to do the same at the next corner.

If he comes across dangers (gravel etc) he will stop and warn us of the dangers.....Wot a guy..

The problem with this is that he is often the first at risk of things like gravel and Police and we all get some warning..He gets none.

Once Denis arrived on his BMW K100 we were ready to hit the road because we were catching up with the others later in the day.

Image

.

Pete gives me a wave as he zoooms past..Check out that beautiful blue sky.

Image

Image

.

We soon got the chance to ride like an American as roadworks forced us onto the wrong side of the road...Scary stuff.

Image

.

This is not far up the road on Maroondah hwy...just past Healesville....Wot a road.

Image

Image

Image

.

I noticed that Steve had stopped to take a pic..So I did the same..I think it was the pub at Buxton.

Image

Image

.

We stopped at Alexandra for lunch.

Image

.

Across the road from where we stopped I noticed this funny statue and checked it out.

Image

Image

.

We had lunch outside in the garden area.

Image

Image

.

I had home made sausage rolls...and they were very nice.

Image

.

Once back on the bike I tested my lolly eating skills..I had jelly-snakes in one pocket and mints in the other..Nice big pocket in these savanna jackets.

There was a real technique in getting a snake in the mouth through the visor hole..and suck and nibble it into the mouth.

Image

.

Back on the road with a full tummy and following Steve..He was leading us to our first and only dirt road part of the trip.

Image

.

After some great twisty roads the Pete and I rode ahead together on we came to dirt..I told Pete to head off and I would follow after the dust settled.

Image

.

I stopped for a couple of pics along this dirt road.

Image

Image

.

All of a sudden Steve came past me leaving me in his dust.

Image

.

Once back on the black stuff I noticed this hazard and stopped and kicked it off the road..I had almost hit it myself and the others were behind me.

Image

.

Once the guys were past I caught up to Denis..and soon passed him.

Image

.

Our next stop was Jamieson for a quick cold drink.

Image

.

Fishing must be big around these parts because there were lots of fish around the walls inside the pub.

Image

Image

.

After the pub Pete wanted to visit an old girlfriend that lived nearby.

We watched as he gave her a kiss and cuddle.

Image

.

Now we're back on the road heading for Whitfield to meet the others..and we were running a bit late.

Image

Image

.

We stopped for fuel and I need to unzip all my zips on my jacket..Thank God for arm-vents.

Image

.

Back on the road just past Mansfield.

Image

.

I stopped to take a pic of where the fires had gone through and re-growth was on the burnt trees.

Image

.

All of a sudden I hear Vooo-rooom behind me as Steve blasts past.

Image

.

I was getting ready to take a nice pic of the view on this corner but was going a bit fast to take it one handed...So sorry I missed the pic.

Image

Image

.

The Whitfield pub was just up the road and we wondered if the others were also running a bit late.

Image

.

We had beat them...Waa-hoo!

Image

.

Time for a nice big glass of..you-know-what.

Image

.

The others had drinks of a different color.

Image

.

It wasn't long and we heard the sound of bikes comming...It was the others..and of coarse we said that we had been waiting for ages.

Image

.

Back on the road and heading for our last stop for the day..A place called Beechworth.

Image

.

The shadows were getting long as I came alongside Dave on the big K1200GT.

Image

.

Here's were we stayed the night.

Image

Image

.

This little blue bike that Greg rode was always getting attention....It was very nice.

Image

.

I still love my old black beauty.

Image

.

The others parked around the back on the gravel..I parked right near the front door of our unit...on the grass.

Image

.

We walked across the road to the pub for a pub meal on the balcony.

Image

.

Relaxing and chatting about the days riding.

Image

.

Just across the road was another pub that looked just like ours..but there's had many more people..Maybe the food was better there.

Image

.

Looking straight across was the famous lolly shop.

Image

.

I walked over and took a couple of pics.

Image

.

Instead of finding lollys and sweets to take a pic of there were lots and lots of Golly-wogs...I thought they were politically incorrect.

Image

.

Back at the pub this was my food....and it was beeeuuudiful.

Image

Image

.

This was our bar-maid...She didn't mind me taking a pic of her jugs.

Image

.

The sun was going down and almost time to hit the sack so we are ready for a big day's riding the next day.

That's about it for day one...The people were starting to leave at the pub across the road and we soon left ours.

That's more like it DJ, a long day's ride, packed with more than the usual beverage and sustenance stops, and some great pics and entertaining report; though the destination is going to confuse our northern neighbours.

Look forward to day two and three.

DJ....great trip, great pics and a nice collection of bikes.

I noticed that you chaps don't much use the centerstand......and also enjoy a cool brewski (stateside name for the yellow berverage) more than what we would do while riding. I guess that the norm here is that if you ride you don't drink and it is fairly well adhered to.....now once you put in for the night.....

I saw your speedo at ~120 kmh (70 mph) and ~3500 rpm, so the bikes downunder are geared like the majority of the stateside ones.
