Opinions on the Schuberth S1 helmet
I'm thinking of purchasing a Schuberth S1 helmet, and I was wondering if anyone here has one and what are their thoughts on this helmet. I currently have a Scorpion EXO-700 - great helmet but suffers from a low frequency booming sound which drives me nuts. If I don't wear ear plugs, there is no low frequency sound, but anything over 50 mph longer than 1 hour causes buzzing for a few hours afterwards. If I do wear ear plugs, I get this loud resonating sound inside the helmet! I've tried many different types of ear plugs, but none have helped much. I even purchased a trial pack of SilentEar reusable ear plugs (http://earplugstore.stores.yahoo.net/silnatrubear.html), but they did absolutely nothing - it was like having no ear plugs!
From what I hear, Schuberth helmets are supposed to be quiet, and they have the internal dark shield. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Paul

I have enjoyed my S1, it fits my head well. Noise is minimal, however I always wear ear plugs so I'm not sure how the noise is w/o. Picked it up at Sierra Trading Post for 377.95 plus an additional 20% off and free shipping (about $300 when all said and done).

Re: Opinions on the Schuberth S1 helmet
Hi there,
I own and use a Schubert S1, and I'm really happy with it.
I've used it for three years now, and mostly ridden niked bikes (two Ducati Monsters and now the Rockster).
The helmet is really quiet, and the Monster is really loud
I also really enjoy the internal dark shield; perfect for sunny days - and easy to flip up in tunnels etc.
My wife and my brother in law also have the S1 and they're both really satisfied with it.
My brother in law has been riding bikes for 15 years now, and he claims this is his best helmet yet.
The S1 is a rather expensive, at least here in Norway, but it's well worth the money the way I see it.

Re: Opinions on the Schuberth S1 helmet
Can't answer your question about the S1 but I have the modular Schuberth C2. It's the best helmet I've ever owned. The internal sunshield is the best! I won't go back to a helmet that doesn't have a flip internal sunshield. No more carrying sunglasses or a 2nd face shield.
As far as noise, mine is quiet but keep in mind that it's hard to compare helmet noise with others if you're on a bike with any kind of windscreen. Buffeting can cause all sorts of noise with any helmet.

Re: Opinions on the Schuberth S1 helmet
Thanks for all your opinions. Yesterday I went to Desimone BMW and they only had the C2s, so I couldn't try one out for fit. I believe I'm a medium, but before I purchase it I want to try one first.
Thanks,
Paul
I also would like to know that. I see they give out a 5% discount for new buyers, but I can't find the 20% off.How did you get the extra 20% discount from the link you sent out?
Thanks,

Re: Opinions on the Schuberth S1 helmet
I order a lot through Sierra Trading Post and they always send me discount codes. For my most recent order, I used code 61616 at checkout, I also tested that code today and it is still valid. This code is good for 20% off but you still have to pay for shipping. Once you order through the online catalog they will send out the free shipping coupons for future orders, or you can read the entire catalog, find and answer the hidden riddle, then submit it to customer service for free shipping.
Like everything else on the internet, just do a search for Sierra Trading Post coupon or discount codes, and input them one at a time until one works!

Re: Opinions on the Schuberth S1 helmet
Well, I took the plunge and bought the helmet in Black - I wanted black because I can then add subtle black reflective stripes, tastefully off course!
I also applied a 20% off coupon which brought the price even lower!
Thanks for all the comments.

Re: Opinions on the Schuberth S1 helmet
EDIT: looks like i was a bit late on posting this. you must have posted while i was writing...oh well.
if you're looking for a quiet helmet then i would go for the schuberth R1. i actually just had a crash with this helmet and although it was in the grass, i was traveling about 50mph when i hit the ground. i tumbled sideways for 25 ft and my head hit the ground about 3 times. i never blacked out and my head had no pain at all.
the R1 is supposedly the quietest helmet on the market and this may be true. i rode a full day w/o earplugs to give this helmet a fair test on sound levels. i'm a music engineer and producer and as i'm getting older and over 20 yrs in a career that relies on my ears for a living, i've been finding that my threshold for noise when i ride has gotten increasingly more sensitive. i've been in the market for a new helmet and found the R1. it's definitely THE quietest helmet i've owned. anything below 70mph is like 40mph in other helmets i've owned. i still wear my earplugs, but with this combo, it's bliss for me.
the built in tinted visor that's inside the main face shield is awesome too. venting and anti-fogging is fantastic.
the fit is fairly accurate if you go with your exact measurement and follow their chart. i bought a scorpion exo-700 a few months ago and their med was too small for me. i ordered a med R1 going with their chart and it fits great. it's slightly tight on my cheeks, but not by much. some helmets are more oval or more narrow or egg shaped, etc. this feels like an upside down egg but mostly round and not very narrow...make sense?
THIS IS THE LIGHTEST HELMET I'VE EVER WORN...hands down!
i've had it since august and i couldn't be more happy. i got a good deal on ebay germany (not available in the states). this guy's got good prices in general on schuberths and trustworthy. my helmet was about $490 w/shipping. a bit pricey but worth it for me. pity i have to replace it
here's some pix of the helmet after the crash. and here's the link to the ebay store in germany.

Re: Opinions on the Schuberth S1 helmet
Update on my purchase of the Schuberth S1 helmet:
Thanks for the good report on your Schuberth! I'm glad it all turned out fine for you after the accident! I've had my share of accidents when I was a "squid", so I know how it feels.
As for the helmet I purchased (S1), I'm sorry to say I had to return it for a refund. Although the quality of the helmet was outstanding, the helmet they sent me had a broken internal visor, which didn't matter too much because I could have exchanged it without any problem. The real problem was fit! I followed exactly the measurments they recommended, and although I went one size up as I was in-between sizes, I could hardly get my head through the bottom of the helmet. Once past this point, the helmet fit was perfect, with no pressure points whatsoever. When I tried to remove the helmet I thought I was going to rip my ears off! I tried putting it on and taking it off a few times to see if the problem was with the angle I was holding the helmet, but I had the same results always.
I mean, I don't think I have a "funny" head type, nor "strange" ears
, so I don't know what the problem is - do others have this problem also? Does the R1 have the same shape as the S1? I mean, I really like Schuberth, and I'm inclined to purchase the R1 based on on Hydra's comments, but I'm wary because of the problem I encountered. I just couldn't see myself going for a ride, stopping the bike, and spending a few painfull minutes trying to remove the helmet without ripping my poor ears off.
By the way, this was the first time I purchased anything from Sierra Trading Post, but I had no problems whatsoever with my refund. They even included a return UPS sticker in the box, so the return was super easy. I will definitly buy from them again.
Well, I guess I'll be keeping my EXO-700 helmet until I find another helmet. Again, thanks for all your opinions.

Re: Opinions on the Schuberth S1 helmet
hello paul,
i remember when i first tried on my R1 it felt fairly tight but felt just right when it was actually on. i struggled a bit taking it off but maybe not as severe as you. i think i got used to it as well as the helmet breaking in over time. like i said, it's super quiet compared to other helmets and very light. there's no question for me to get another R1 to replace the one i crashed with. i measured my head and followed their sizing. does it fit perfect once it's on?

Re: Opinions on the Schuberth S1 helmet
Yes, the helmet fit perfectly. Even though I would like to buy it, I don't think it has the DOT certification to be sold here in the US. A helmet that I would love to have is the ROOF Boxer V - very cool looking!
