There are more Japan than Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.

From OMA Japan famous catching spot for Tuna and Mainland Most Northern Point.

To answer your question:

I would say "just blow off steam festival". Rice planting is over, kids out of school, street vendors need some money, let us have festival. Another way of getting people like me to visit and spend my hard earned money. This is similar to country fair in US.

Each area of the country created their own costume and style of dancing with local folk songs to represent the area.

Guys!! Japanese love to eat , drink and do not let the cute little women fool you. They can drink too. Ha!Ha!

Awesome! Any pics of the Oirase gorge or Lake Towada? It's been over a decade since I was there. I've been to the Nebuta & Towada festivals. That lake is one of the most beautiful scenes in the world IMO.
