Oil Drain Plug Tool

Post by rtallent »

I am looking for a more user-friendly tool for removing the oil drain plug than the one supplied with the basic tool kit. It looks like it would take about a T55 or T60 Torx bit.

Can anyone tell me if that's right? If so, which one and if not, what is it??

Thanks in advance.

T50 works fine. While you are at it, change the oil plug to a magnetic one.

a magnetic plug or this works really well too. I have one and it fits perfectly.

It actually looks nicer than in the picture. It has a black trim and chrome looking metal. Not that you'll see it when it is on the filter. But just knowing even the filter has bling will make your ride better...hahahahahaha.

We have been out-blinged for a while; Harley shops sell a chromed oil filter if you REALLY want bling

not really 'looking' for the bling. Like the magnet on the drain plug, that was just a bonus. hahahaha

It's not a security Torx bit, is it? I can't get the !@$%^ plug out! It feels like the bit will engage the splines in the plug for tightening but not loosening. (Actually, I'm using a T50 socket on a ratchet, so I know I'm turning it the right way.) I'm new to the brand, but it can't be *that* different from other bikes, can it?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Its not a security torx... just standard.

Remember... if you are on the left side (where the filler plug is) you have to pull the wrench FORWARD (toward the front of the bike) to unscrew the plug. Watch for the crush washer when you remove the plug... if it stays in the hole you will not get a good seal with the new one!

Maybe there were different plugs installed, but mine is just an 8 mm Allen.

Bingo! Thank you very much. I made the mistake of assuming it's Torx like everything else on the bike since I couldn't really see it easily.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder if it relates to the date of manufacture. Mine was made in 1/2007. When were yours made, ka5ysy and Neil?
