Re: stupid dilemma - safety or expediency in summer riding g
What prompted this post was that I saw a guy ride by my house on a (i think) K1200RS wearing a t-shirt, shorts, and flip-flops - didn't notice if he had gloves or not - and it struck me as odd to see a BMW rider doing that. I have nice ventilated gloves and a decent summer jacket - its not mesh but ...

stupid dilemma - safety or expediency in summer riding gear
I don't ride much in the summer because I wear shorts most of the time and I won't ride in shorts and running shoes. Sometimes I would just like to hop on the bike to run to the store but it involves changing into jeans and boots and putting on the jacket and its really just much simpler to jump in ...

Rusty Bolt Heads
I can't believe its been more than two years since I posted here last. I'm trying to sell my 2003 R1150R - don't really want to but I don't ride much and need the money - and the first buyer in months that seemed mildly interested drove an hour and a half just to tell me he didn't like the rusty bol...

Re: rough running, red hot catalytic converter
I'm amazed that something so simple and seemingly minor could have such a substantial impact causing the bike to run so incredibly badly and even worse getting the catalytic converter so hot it turned red in one spot.

rough running, red hot catalytic converter
r1150r.net saves the day. I just finished reassembly after replacing the clutch housing and fired up the bike. It ran rough, backfired and was not happy. Then I noticed the back of the catalytic converter getting red-hot. I shut the bike down immediately thinking the worst. A quick search of r1150r....

Re: Clutch Slave Cylinder
Starter, flywheel, and clutch slave and only 4000 total miles on the bike? That does suck... Is this a used bike? Do you know the service history of the clutch fluid? It doesn't have the stainless brake lines... so it must be an 02 or an 03. Fluid should be changed every 2 years... Its mine since n...

Re: Clutch Slave Cylinder
That does not look good  What indication/symptoms did you have? If it were mine, I'd replace that felt washer inside the tranny tube that is supposed to keep that kind of yak off the clutch disk...which I hope it did. no symptoms at all really - never really had a problem with the clutch. th...

Re: Clutch Slave Cylinder
I live in the land of stop signs and traffic lights and most of those 4000 miles were put on with a short commute to the the train with 6 lights and 4 stop signs in 4 miles or if I took the long way 10 signs and 12 lights within about 7 miles. So I could see that stressing the clutch a bit.

Clutch Slave Cylinder
Based on what I've seen on CycleRob's post, this needs to be replaced. Why would this happen with only 4000 miles? I'm beginning to think BMW's are really crap. At least all my spines seem to be in good shape.

Re: Bad cold start (sound of $$$)
I've had the same problem a few times and its always when its cold but the bike would eventually start. The last time it happened, no such luck, just a spinning starter. I pulled the starter and found the starter pinion teeth were chewed up and the flywheel (clutch housing) was in really bad shape. ...

I hate spiders
I've been busy replacing my clutch housing and with all the stuff I have to take off, I'm amazed at the spider cocoons that are in every nook and cranny. In the recesses for the battery box nuts, in between the case fins under the tran, inside the sidestand switch, even found them attached to the di...

Re: reinstalling starter thrust collar and snap ring
euromotorelectics has the Valeo starter for 189.00 and the Enduralast for 119.00, but the starter drive itself is only 49.00 so there is a big difference but you really need some patience. Interestingly, based on the pictures on their website, the Enduralast seems to use the older version of the sta...

reinstalling starter thrust collar and snap ring
just in case anyone out there tries to replace their starter drive and gets the snap ring and thrust collar off by following the information here: http://www.largiader.com/tech/valeo/ (I got that from a FAQ or thread here) heed the warning on that page: "Reassembly is difficult at this point!&q...

Re: new starter drive versus old starter drive
the folks at euromotorelectrics got back to me quickly and yes, its an upgraded starter drive and, yes, as the previous poster indicated, it is indeed the one you'd get on a new valeo replacement starter so its all good.

new starter drive versus old starter drive
many long months without my bike and I'm finally getting to fixing it rebuilding the starter to replace the starter drive - got a new one from euromotorelectrics the old and new are different on the gear end but the drive fits on the shaft/splines and the gear itself is the same teeth and all so hop...

Starter Clean/Rebuild
I was checking out the FAQ on starter cleaning and its really going to be helpful as I rebuild mine. I've posted pics previously of the pinion gear that needs to be replaced. A new bmw starter seems to cost about $300 and the pinion alone is $134. I found the complete starter for 189 and pinion for ...

Re: MRA screens
I have the second as well and also question whether adjusting the piece on top has any impact. Also with that one, I use the handlebar mount but there is a version that uses the standard BMW flyscreen mount (or something like that). The handlebar mount was tricky and I'm still not happy with getting...

Re: nasty clunking and whirring when trying to start
The big question is can I manage to do that myself. MIXR's bike looked pretty well stripped down. I'm pretty comfortable tearing apart my old GPZ550 whenever it needs repairs but this seems a bit more complicated.
