I had good luck with a standard wattage Vision Plus bulb from Powerbulbs.com. This is not the DOT approved version sold in the states and was a nice improvement over the stock bulb.

red pipes
The pipes are single walled and will definitly turn cherry red when idled without airflow. This happens sometimes when synching the throttle bodies even though fans are set to blow on the engine. BMW does not recommend warming the bike up but simply cranking up and driving off. The red pipes are not...

The brake pads on disc brakes are always in contact with the disc and it is very normal to here them rubbing when you turn the wheel.

tire wear
While it may show on most tires, it is certainly better on some than others. My Macadam 90 Michelins were terrible as well as Bridgestone 020's. The Michelin Pilot Roads were pretty good and so far my Avons 46's? have been very good with about 6,000 miles. I believe that correct tire pressures helps...

I started with the R and ended up on the RT; I believe that the ST would be a great do it all bike. If I was trading tomorrow it would get a very hard look.

I started out on the centerstand because I could squeeze a little more in and then moved to the sidestand. My RT holds plenty anyway and it is a lot less trouble. Gas pump areas frequently have slippery spots too so the less handling the better.

I have been using Amsoil 75-90 in the FD and went to Mobil 1 in the 75-140 for the tranny. All seems to be fine.

I personally have less problem with being stopped than I do the increased insurance rates. Too bad we can't lobby against this rape by insurance. The police and troopers that enforce these laws should keep that in mind when they are stopping Joe Average with a radar unit that may have been donated b...

For me it's not the amount of riding I do but the type. I gain more out of one trip to the mountains than I do from weeks worth of local riding.

shifting
It is not necessary to fully pull in the clutch lever just a quick blip. Preload the shifter just before you blip the clutch and it should move right into gear. The big twin decelerates so quickly that any delay in shifting causes more problem.

Too much speed
It's not clear from your description but you indicated that you let up on the brake because of the rear wheel skid. Were you using full front wheel braking? We all have lapses of concentration so I wouldn't give up; there are days when I leave the house on the bike and find my mind wandering so I ju...

ABS
Just a note on the comments about the '02 RT vs. the R bike. The RT has fully linked brakes and can be a bear in slow speed maneuvers, the ABS equipped R on the other hand is partially linked and allows separate use of the rear brake. In slow maneuvers the R even with ABS is much easier to handle.

After many years of not riding I bought the R and put 5,000 miles on it before moving to the RT. Many people have gone back to riding after a number of years and they find that the old skills come back quickly. On the other hand you do not indicate any previous experience and I am inclined to sugges...

The Kisan Signalminder you mention does give you running lights using the turn signals, it also allows for the running lights to be at full power or at a reduced level. I used it on my R bike and then transferred to the RT and it has been trouble free.

If I'm not mistaken you need to remove the air filter cover and the air intake tube to slide the battery out. After the tupperware is removed of course.

I don't overdo valve adjustments, but I do follow recommended intervals.
I admit that I haven't found much change, but the bike in question in this thread was probably headed for a burnt valve. Valve adjustment on the boxer is so easy why take the chance?
