Just got back from a 2,500 mile trip with the wife. Tennessee to Vermont, via upstate NY, Poconos, Deleware Water Gap to the RA Rally. Her K1200R ran like a top, and as expected, it needs a new set of tires, we are using the Conti Road Attack - Street.
The Rockster came home with a tick on the right and a low speed stumble. Tick was excessive rocker end play and the miss was a combination of a slightly out of synch throttle cable and a very slight air leak on the right air tubes, probably from when I replaced a worn TB unit a few years ago...
Took me a few hours today to find and correct the issues, after several years of trying to achieve perfection. First fix was the cam chain tensioner in spring of 08 then a worn TB shaft, late summer 08, bike was NOT used in 09 due to moving and construction issues, and went back into service in April of this year. What I finally found was too much rocker end play. It was at high end of spec, but bothersome and noisy. I used the methodology Tom Cutter taught me to adjust it, loosen the bolts and light taps with a 4 oz ball peen. A twin-max was used for the balance gauge.
In 09 I rode only the R80ST since it has Avon Distanzia dual sport tires on it.
Bike has 56k miles on it, many sets of tires, wilbers shocks, and a sargent seat, and Jesse bags. The Z-techinc exhaust installed by the dealer when new was replaced with the stock exhaust, also in O8
What a bike to tour on.
Did Skyline Drive and the BRP on the way home.
