Labor Estimate swapping trans internals?

Post by macx »

The wonders of the internet!

Just this afternoon I posted an ad for my R1150R roadster trans
and already got a call this evening from Fairbanks, AL!!

He had taken his bike to his son's place in Seattle where the
input shaft splines went out. His son apparently saw the ad.

If I understood, his is an Adventure, also a 2004. That's
what I THOUGHT I had bought last summer (an RTP trans)
but when I got it installed and back on the road a couple days
ago I quickly discovered it was essentially the same darn trans
I just took out - all that work for nothing!

He was looking pretty hard for a trans. I didn't ask if he'd
be willing to sell me his trans for parts, it's got less than 20k
on it. He may be thinking along the same lines I am, below,
but it won't hurt to ask when he gets back to me. I know the
low ratio trans are hard to find.

I looked in the parts fiche and saw that the input shafts are the
same part # in the GS Adv & the roadster.

First question, what is his trans worth? Seems I've seen "parts"
units go for ~$200 or so, course that's with probly quite a few miles.

Second question, any idea what the dealer would charge to swap
the parts if I removed my trans and took both units in to him?

I think I'd use both my input shaft on my existing trans and the trans
front cover, just in case the front cover on his wasn't properly indexed
to the engine which very possibly could have been the cause of his
spline failure.

Per my shop manual, I know about what it would take work-wise to
remove my input shaft and front cover and put them in the GS Adv unit.
Nothing I'm equipped to tackle.

Appreciate any educated guesses.

By the time I'd ship it anywhere I'd be just as well off from a cost standpoint
to just bring them in to the local dealer, assuming they can do the work.

I think I'd go in and ask them first, however, as well as getting an estimate
if they will provide even a ball park figure.

Thanks!!

I have no doubt that it would be significant, but that may be my only
chance to end up with a GS Adv / RTP ratio trans for quite some time.

I've got time to swap the trans in my bike now being I'm laid off but
that probly won't last too much longer, then I'll be working away from
home probly from over a hundred to maybe even 500 miles and won't
have a chance to do the work for at least a year. And I've just gone
thru it for the first time, so have the learning curve over with and it's
fresh in my mind.

If I could get the other trans for parts for maybe $200, it would be
worth it to me to pay a couple hundred or more to get the parts
swapped, with me R&R the trans in my bike.

Just hoping someone has had some internal trans work done and
could give me some kind of a realistic idea. No parts involved, just
labor on the trans itself.
